WAC 113 South Lounge


The WAC South Lounge is a teaching, meeting, and event space located on the first floor of the World Affairs Center.  Instructional Technology available in this space includes a 70-inch wall-mounted HDTV, speaker bar, an Apple TV, a region-free Pioneer Blu-Ray player, along with analog and digital connections for laptops and mobile devices, and a composite video connection for legacy video devices.

The information below documents how to accomplish common tasks using the a/v equipment in the room.

Displaying via HDMI


WAC South Lounge has an HDMI digital a/v connection available for the latest laptops and digital devices.

  1. Connect the HDMI cable from the hook on the side of the a/v cabinet to the HDMI port on your laptop or mobile device adapter.

  2. Press the ON button on the wall-mounted Extron a/v controller to activate the display and speakers.

  3. Once the display activates, press the HDMI source button on the Extron a/v controller.

  4. The volume knob on the Extron a/v controller can be used to adjust the audio level. 

  5. Shutdown the system when you are finished:

    • Unplug the HDMI cable from your computer and loop it back onto the hook on the side of the a/v cabinet.

    • Press the OFF button on the Extron a/v controller to shut down the system.

Displaying via VGA


WAC South Lounge has a VGA analog a/v connection available for legacy laptops.

  1. Connect the VGA cable from the hook on the side of the a/v cabinet to the VGA port on your laptop.

  2. Connect the 3.5mm audio cable to the headphone output port on your laptop.

  3. Press the ON button on the wall-mounted Extron a/v controller to activate the display and speakers.

  4. Once the display activates, press the PC source button on the Extron a/v controller.

  5. The volume knob on the Extron a/v controller can be used to adjust the audio level. 

  6. Shutdown the system when you are finished:

    • Unplug the VGA and 3.5mm audio cables from your computer and loop them back onto the hook on the side of the a/v cabinet.

    • Press the OFF button on the Extron a/v controller to shut down the system.

Displaying the Apple TV


WAC South Lounge has an Apple TV permanently assigned. The Apple TV has several built-in applications that can be utilized to playback high quality video.  The primary use of the Apple TV in this space is to wirelessly mirror the screen of a laptop or mobile device.

  1. Press the ON button on the wall Extron a/v controller to activate the system.

  2. Once the display activates, then press the TUNER button on the Extron a/v controller.

  3. Use the Apple TV remote from the a/v cabinet drawer to navigate the Apple TV menu, access apps, and control a/v playback.

  4. The volume knob on the Extron a/v controller can be used to adjust the audio level.

  5. Shut down the system by pressing the OFF button on the Extron a/v controller when you are finished.





AirPlay Mirroring using a Mac Laptop


WAC South Lounge has an Apple TV permanently assigned. The primary use of the Apple TV in this space is to wirelessly mirror the screen of a laptop or mobile device. Note that AirPlay mirroring only works natively on Apple laptops and devices.

  1. Press the ON button on the wall Extron a/v controller to activate the system.

  2. Once the display activates, press the TUNER button on the Extron a/v controller.

  3. On the Mac, click on the AirPlay / Display Preferences icon in the upper right corner of the display (near the clock).

  4. From the AirPlay To section of the drop-down menu, select the WAC South Lounge Apple TV.

  5. Input the four-digit security pin code from the Apple TV display.

  6. Your screen should now be mirrored on the Apple TV.

  7. When you are finished sharing your screen, press the AirPlay Mirroring button again to deactivate the connection.

  8. Shut down the system by pressing the OFF button on the Extron a/v controller when you are finished.

AirPlay Mirroring using an iPad


WAC South Lounge has an Apple TV permanently assigned. The primary use of the Apple TV in this space is to wirelessly mirror the screen of a laptop or mobile device. Note that AirPlay mirroring only works natively on Apple laptops and devices.

  1. Press the ON button on the wall Extron a/v controller to activate the system.

  2. Once the display activates, press the TUNER button on the Extron a/v controller.

  3. From the iPad/iPhone screen, swipe up from the bottom to display the Quick Settings menu.

  4. Press the AirPlay Mirroring button.

  5. From the AirPlay To section of the drop-down menu, select the WAC South Lounge Apple TV.

  6. Input the four-digit security pin code from the Apple TV display.

  7. Your screen should now be mirrored on the Apple TV.

  8. When you are finished sharing your screen, press the AirPlay Mirroring button again to deactivate the connection.

  9. Shut down the system by pressing the OFF button on the Extron a/v controller when you are finished.

 

Connecting and Displaying a Blu-Ray Player


WAC South Lounge has a region-free Blu-Ray player permanently assigned to the room, however, it uses the same HDMI connection as a laptop, so it must be connected/disconnected when needed.

  1. Remove the Blu-Ray player from the a/v cabinet and place it on top of the cabinet.

  2. Connect the power cord from the Blu-Ray player to a power outlet next to the cabinet.

  3. Connect the HDMI cable from the hook on the side of the a/v cabinet to the HDMI output port on the back of the Blu-Ray player.

  4. Press the ON button on the wall-mounted Extron a/v controller to activate the system.

  5. Once the display activates, press the HDMI button on the Extron a/v controller.

  6. Insert the Blu-Ray disc into the player.

  7. Use the Blu-Ray remote from the a/v cabinet drawer to navigate the disc menus and control a/v playback.

  8. The volume knob on the Extron a/v controller can be used to adjust the audio level. 

  9. Shutdown the system when you are finished:

    • Eject your Blu-Ray disc.

    • Unplug the HDMI and power cables.

    • Return the player to the cabinet and loop the HDMI cable back onto the hook on the side of the a/v cabinet.

    • Press the OFF button on the Extron a/v controller to shut down the system.

Connecting and Displaying a DVD/VCR


WAC South Lounge has an analog composite a/v connection available for legacy video devices.  Note that this space does not have a permanently installed DVD/VCR, but one may be borrowed from IT Support (along with necessary cables and remote) on a per-need basis to be used in the classroom.

  1. Place the DVD/VCR on top of the a/v cabinet.

  2. Connect the power cord of the DVD/VCR to a power outlet next to the cabinet.

  3. Connect the color-coded composite RCA cable to the corresponding output ports on the DVD/VCR and the input ports on the A/V connections panel on the wall near the a/v cabinet. 

    • Yellow = Video

    • Red = Audio right channel

    • White = Audio left channel

  4. Press the ON button on the wall Extron a/v controller to activate the system.

  5. Once the display activates, press the Video button on the Extron a/v controller.

  6. Insert your DVD or VHS tape into the player.

  7. Use the DVD/VCR remote to navigate the disc menus and control a/v playback.

  8. The volume knob on the Extron a/v controller can be used to adjust the audio level. 

  9. When you are finished using the system:

    • Eject your VHS tape or DVD.

    • Unplug the RCA and power cables.

    • Press the OFF button on the Extron a/v controller to shut down the system.

    • Please return the equipment, cables, and remote to IT Support.

Troubleshooting


HDMI Display Problems


If your device is not properly connected, you will see a No Signal message on the bottom right corner of the HDTV display:

  • Verify sure that the video and audio connections from the HDMI port of the laptop are securely seated.

  • Verify that the HDMI input port on the a/v connections panel is securely seated.

  • If you are using an HDMI display adapter, verify that the connection between the HDMI and the adapter and the connection between the adapter and the output port on the laptop are both securely seated.

  • Verify that the HDMI input is been selected on the Extron a/v controller.

  • Disconnect the HDMI cable from your laptop, wait three seconds, then reseat the cable in the HDMI port on the laptop.  This will force the laptop to re-detect the external display.

VGA Display Problems


If your device is not properly connected, you will see a No Signal message on the bottom right corner of the TV display:

  • Verify sure that the video and audio connections from the output ports of the laptop are securely seated.

  • Verify that the video and audio connections to the a/v connections panel are securely seated.

  • Verify that the PC input is been selected on the Extron a/v controller.

  • Restart your laptop to force the laptop to detect the connection.

AirPlay Wireless Mirroring Problems


If your device is not connecting or displaying properly via the Apple TV:

If the Apple TV home screen or passcode screen is not visible

  • verify that the TUNER source is selected on the Extron a/v controller.

  • If the Apple TV home screen is not visible, it may have gone into sleep mode, click the center button in the Apple TV remote to wake the device

If the home screen or passcode screen is visible:

  • Verify that you are on the BCNet wifi network.

    • AirPlay to this display will not work on BCGuest, cellular data, or any other wifi network.

  • Verify that you have correctly entered the four-digit passcode.

  • Verify that you are running the latest version of MacOS/iOS on your Apple device. 

    • Apple devices running outdated versions of MacOS or iOS may not be able to successfully connect via AirPlay until they have been fully updated.

Audio Problems


If your device is connected properly, but the sound bar is not producing audio:

  • Verify that the audio connections to the laptop/device and the a/v connections panel are securely seated.

  • Verify that the audio output level on the laptop or device is at 100% to give the system the strongest signal possible.

  • If the green power LED light on the sound bar is unlit, then the speaker has entered standby mode.  Press the ON button on the speaker or the Extron a/v controller to power the speaker back on.

  • If the speaker bar is on, verify that two blue LEDs are lit on the Source setting.  If not, continue to press the Source button until two are lit.
